City Mayor Francis Anthony S. Garcia led the inauguration of new Barangay Learning Hubs (BLH) in Cupang Proper and Cataning on August 23.
City government officials and leaders of civic organizations attended the blessing of the two learning hubs. The two learning hubs were located close to barangay halls.
The learning hub in Brgy. Cupang Proper was the first to be inaugurated. There, Ms. Cheryl Ortega of the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) Regional Office III joined Mayor Garcia in inspecting the hub.
After the brief ceremony in Cupang Proper, the company proceeded to Brgy. Cataning to formally open its BLH. Then, Mayor Garcia signed the memorandum of agreement with DICT so the two new BLHs can be called Tech4ED (Technology for Economic Development) Centers.
Also present during the twin inaugural ceremonies were city government department heads, members of the Multi-Sectoral Governance Coalition (MSGC, Ugnayang Balangueño), Department of Education-Balanga City, and community leaders from the two barangays.
Mayor Garcia’s First
Before he won the elections, Mayor Garcia headed the Barangay Mentors’ Society, an organization of educators coming from all over Balanga.
It was during his stint as the Society’s adviser that he came up with the idea of having a resource center in every barangay. With the help of MSGC, to which he also belongs, he opened the first BLH in Doña Francisca in February.
The learning hubs are rooms furnished with computer units that are rigged to a dependable internet connection which enables users to access educational sites.
Khan Academy is the most recommended among the educational sites being patronized by BLH. The Khan Academy software offers readings and trainings in various subjects while allowing students to move at their own pace.
Not long after the first BLH was opened, Mayor Garcia endowed the City of Balanga National High School (COBNHS) with computer units so it can also establish a School Learning Hub (SLH). This school-based resource center is almost similar to its community counterpart except that it allows intensive training on call center center service.
According to Mayor Garcia, he intends to put up learning hubs in every barangay, if possible. By Arli Joshua Atienza
