In celebration of Public Library Day, the City Government of Balanga conducted its third Book Character Parade on March 17. The parade was joined in by pupils of 27 Day Care Centers in the city. The city library, in collaboration with the City Social Welfare and Development Office and Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, hosted it.
Donned in colorful costumes of their much-loved book characters, the youngsters trod the streets from Doña Francisca Covered Court to Plaza Mayor.
Coun. Victor Baluyot, chair of the Committee on Education, warmly expressed his greetings and thanked the children and their supportive parents for actively joining the activity despite the hot weather. He reminded them of the importance of learning and advised them to keep on reading.
Ms. Lorenza Oliveros, city librarian, also delivered a presentation about the city library.
In behalf of the city mayor, Vice-Mayor Vianca Lita Gozon, delivered an inspirational message and persuaded parents to find time to read to their children. She said she strongly believes that a person would grow smarter through reading.
‘Melai and Friends’ of the National Library provided entertainment with their lively storytelling and puppetry. The afternoon’s fascination continued as the Wonder Park mascots danced with the kids.
Guest Speaker Quintin Jose V. Pastrana, founder and managing director of Library Renewal Program, visited the city library to see its needs. He also expressed his willingness to donate books and other reading materials for the benefit of Balangueños.
