Engraving history through art.
Emerging to become the best tourism destination, City of Balanga initiated a creative and unique approach to design the giant “banga” markers in the city through the “Pinta at Kasaysayan ng Siyudad (Pinta-KaSi): Banga Marker Painting Contest” on November 4.
Assisted by the City Tourism Office (CTO), Balanga City Tourism Council (BCTC) spearheaded the activity. As part of an aggressive marketing strategy towards the end, it can be recalled that BCTC initiated the installation of said markers at strategic entry points in the city. Its main purpose is to welcome arriving guests and tourists as they approach the city proper.
With graphic artists from GuhitPinas (GP)–Bataan Chapter competing in the painting contest, the city aims to further enhance the “banga’s” aesthetic value, as well as to catch the eye and arouse the curiosity of travellers. City Administrator Rodolfo H. De Mesa claimed that Pinta-KaSi was BCTC’s first major art-related event.
During an orientation on November 3, artists were divided into 18 groups of three individuals per group. Each group was assigned a marker and was given lyric lines from the official Balanga City Hymn, “Dugong Balangueno.” Their main goal is to depict the history and cultural heritage of Balanga using the given lines.
Although the weather did not play along, participants were all fired up during the contest proper. BCTC President Maria Teresa Robles and Vice-President Razz Austria welcomed attendees and delivered their good luck speeches.
From morning to afternoon, painters showcased their unique talents with different art mediums being embedded on each marker. GP –Bataan Chapter Adviser Al Quizon said that with these kinds of projects from the city, it will only be a matter of time before the art scene in Bataan flourishes.
“Malaking bagay ito [Pinta-KaSi] kasi unang-una, sinuportahan ang mga artist ditto sa Bataan. Tapos nagkakasama-sama ang mga artists mula Dinalupihan, Moronng hanggang Mariveles. Lumalakas ‘yung bonding,” Quizon expanded.
Judges, on the other hand, observed the finished product on November 5. Awarding ceremony will be on December 4 during the celebration of “Paskong Balangueno.”
Participating departments included City Administrator’s Office, City Education and Excellence Development Office, Multi-Sectoral Governance Coalition, Public Safety Office, DepEd City of Balanga, De Guzman Group of Companies and Flores- Wee General Merchandise.
