All fears were washed away with City of Balanga’s refreshing “Under the Sea”-themed Halloween fest at Plaza Mayor on October 27.
The event was the city’s effort to slowly weave the celebration away from the scary get-ups and props that usually accompany the occasion. City Administrator Rodolfo H. De Mesa said that re-packaging the activity by adhering to popular children’s themes could invite better participation from residents and attract a greater number of people to watch.
Spearheaded by the City Tourism Office (CTO), the activity was also attended by members of Balanga City Tourism Council (BCTC), Multi-Sectoral Governance Coalition (MSGC), and Sangguniang Panglungsod (SP). It opened with the usual “trick-or-treat” parade in the afternoon where kids from all over the city, donned in their colourful sea-themed costumes, participated.
Part of the program was the currently popular “Baby Shark” Dance Contest wherein five (5) schools competed. Balanga Elementary School dominated the competition and was declared “Champion.” Cataning and GL David elementary schools placed second and third respectively.
Highlighting the event, kids, with their parents, flaunted their best costumes onstage. Mayor Francis Anthony S. Garcia, wife Raquel Francis Garcia, SP Members and Lion’s Club members from both Bataan and Balanga City gave out candies and prizes to kids and parents who won in the “Best in Costume” awards.
In her message to city residents, Ms. Garcia advised parents to let their children pick their own costume as it could hone their capability in decision making.
An “Under the Sea”-inspired photo booth was also formally opened after the contest.
